History: his wiki page.

But really, it's easier to write out the known history for him:

  • Wolfwood is an orphan who was raised at the Hopeland Orphanage. We have no idea how old he was when he was orphaned or why he was orphaned here, but he's there. Kind of rough and tumble, grumpy even as a little kid, but ultimately good with the birds (called Tomases in Noman's Land). No ages are given.

  • At some point, he forms an attachment to another orphaned kid, Livio. Took him under his wing, teased him to make him smile, got high with him, generally protected him, and watched out for him. Livio was his brother.

  • Sometime after that, he was discovered to have a special blood type that meant he could integrate with some modifications a cult, known as the Eye of Michael, was performing on people (specifically kids, to let them live longer, but it's possible they were also experimenting on older people. Crazy cult, you know how it goes.)

  • He joined the cult because they promised to keep the orphanage, and Livio, safe/not interfere with them.

  • Child experimentation, some torture, he's a smartass with a mouth and back talks people, there's more torture, he tries to escape, it goes badly, he's stuck.

  • He grows up (there's no definite timeline for his age, but he's an adult) and learns to be an assassin, one of the best in Noman's Land and is given one of the Punishers. His is a giant cross he carries on his back.

  • He meets Vash, Meryl, and Roberto in the desert, helps them escape a giant sandworm that eats them, and then it's discovered that the entire incident was set up, presumably by Wolfwood and Zazie the Beast, who is possibly part of the cult (although unclear if he really is).

  • He introduces himself as a priest, but really he considers himself more of an undertaker, not a priest.

  • He hangs out with Vash et al to help them out, but really he was sent by Millions Knives, Vash's brother and technically the head of the Eye of Michael, to escort Vash to the city of July.

  • In the middle of this escort mission, he is targeted by his adopted brother Livio, who was also experimented on, and forced to nearly kill him, which was torturous for him. While this fight is going on, the sand steamer/ship they are on is sabotaged and set to run straight into Hoepland, where Wolfwood's orphanage is, and he's upset by that.

  • They stop it (well, Vash does), they end up at Vash's home, and then he and Vash have to go racing through the desert to rescue Meryl and Roberto, and Wolfwood fulfills his duty, gets his contract (and possibly the deed to the orphanage), leaving Vash to face his brother.

  • He flees town only to turn around and grab Meryl from the middle of the fight between Vash and Millions Knives, rescuing her from certain death and then actually escapes.

Personality:

  • Question: What does your character act like around strangers? Around friends? Does the way they act tend to match the way they feel on the inside? Why or why not?

  • Answer: Wolfwood is a fairly straightforward guy. He's not friendly or jovial to most people, strangers or friends, often bickers and antagonizes people just to get a rise out of them, and survival is of the utmost importance to him, even above things like his values. He likes to tease! There's definitely an edge to his humor that shows up no matter who the person is— a friend or a stranger. But there's a certain amount of caring that goes on in his interactions with friends; his bickering hides a tender heart. He'll yell at someone that he'll murder them, but it's to hide the worry and fear he feels and remind people they deserve to eat while chomping down on a worm (the only food they really have at hand— it's more of a flying bug type creature).

Wolfwood is still that kid who grew up in an orphanage, taking care of the little birds and taking the shy, frightened kid under his wing. While he was gruff and grumpy even then, the instinct to protect was still there. He hasn't been allowed to be that kid, not since he left the orphanage, and he built a thick skin to protect that heart— not anything out of the ordinary for him, but it just meant that he often comes across as strictly tough, but he's still somewhat sensitive, and he tries to hide how much he cares by being a jerk.

Additionally, Wolfwood feels like a monster deep down inside. He's been experimented on, and rendered inhuman while he still looks completely human. Injuries heal quickly and he's unlikely to die from most things that would kill an average human. But he doesn't talk about that; even the closest people to him don't know the truth. That almost never comes out, and he'd prefer to keep it that way. But for all of his teasing and assholishness, he's not a monster in his interactions with people, even strangers (unless they're trying to kill him).

  • Question: What is the most important thing to your character? Who or what would they die for? What would they never, ever do no matter the circumstances?

  • Answer: The orphanage where Wolfwood grew up, the Hopeland Orphanage, is the most important thing in the world to him. He would do anything for them; he has done everything for the orphanage and his adopted brother, Livio: he joined the Eye of Michael in order to keep them safe. It's unclear if he knew what he was getting into (he likely didn't). He did try to escape at one point, but it went poorly, so he was clearly willing to risk them in order to escape the torture and certain doom that he was dealing with, so there are some survival instincts there, outside of the orphanage, but it still trumps most everything— it's why he's doing everything he was doing, including betraying the best person he knew.

Wolfwood would say he wouldn't rescue people or think about letting them live, or more ideals along those lines. But he does: he tries to get through to his adopted brother (and almost succeeds, except for some mental programming built into Livio) and goes back to rescue Meryl, even though it's dangerous and risky as hell. So really, he would never actually give up on people.

  • Question: A character’s superpowers or their job do not count as their personality– but how does your character FEEL about these aspects of themselves? Would they change them if they could? Do they feel any kind of obligation to use their powers/career in a certain way? Why or why not?

  • Answer: Wolfwood has a front as a priest, which he doesn't give a fuck about because he's not religious, doesn't understand religion, and finds it pretty deplorable. In his "real" job, he's known as Nicholas the Undertaker. He's an assassin. A passing comment from a side character makes it sound like he does it regularly, and he has a reputation, and he's clearly incredibly stressed about it, chainsmoking cigarettes like they were going out of style (and smoking them oddly— he would finish maybe half to three-quarters of the cigarette then light another one). He hates the organization that made him what he is and what he does. He thinks of himself as a monster, barely human, with no hope. It would be a mercy to put him down, but he can't let go yet, not until he saves the orphanage. (And then, once he does that, he has to go and save Meryl.) He's also furious that the organization put both the orphanage and Livio in harm's way, and that doesn't endear his abilities to him, either. (Why was this done to him when they risked the orphanage and modified Livio?)

He feels no obligation to use his powers and doesn't think he's been handed something great and wonderful, but he also doesn't know how to do anything else. He would love to change them, deep down, but that's wishful thinking, and he doesn't have the space for that. The monstrous nature of his abilities means he can't be anything other than who and what he is.

Abilities:
  • Talented gunman and sharpshooter, considered one of the best in his homeworld. Has no problem picking up any gun and firing it. He regularly carries and uses an incredibly heavy gun, The Punisher, which is in the shape of a cross.
  • Accelerated healing that makes him close to indestructible; he has vials that provide instant healing and rejuvenation, able to cure almost anything.

  • Divine sensory abilities, aka vastly improved senses

  • A body like steel, advanced muscle mass, and incredible balance.

Inventory:
  • The Punisher, a heavy, cross-shaped gun that is a machine gun, a laser gun, and also holds an arsenal of handguns.

  • Two packs of cigarettes

  • Lollipops

  • His lighter, gold with the Eye of Michael symbol on it

  • His contract with the Eye of Michael, releasing him from work, along with the deed to the orphanage

  • A spare set of sunglasses

  • Blank invoices, printed with his name, proclaiming him to be a priest

  • Eternal Reward: He just wants the orphanage to be okay. He doesn't trust anyone to do this, but he can't think of anything else, so the success and safety of the orphanage is all he asks for.

Goals/Ideas: I want him to talk to someone about the entire experimentation thing and feeling like a monster and maybe realize it's not his fault (that's a stretch) and that kindness isn't a punishment. Also, make some friends and actually care about what happens to them and acknowledge that he cares (also a stretch). Maybe learn a skill that isn't killing and running and shooting guns, and have a chance to take care of people without the stress of them nearly dying all the time.
